kingdom (because of the protection it offered its citizens) was worth just about any personal ethics sacrifice. This is also expressed in the proverb "The road to hell is paved with good intentions". IMO if someone tells me that he is doing something 'for my own good', I always question his understanding, and start looking for his potential hidden agenda. The greater good is all well and good, but I always ask "Who appointed YOU judge of what is the greater good?"
