You're quite right; actions and choices may be ethical or not, but substances do not have an ethic to which they could adhere. But, let's make the pat answers a little more difficult...
Let us assume you are getting responsibly stoned in the privacy of your own burrow -- maybe a little nibble on a bit of cannabis or something. No one's getting hurt. You're not even over-indulging -- just a little something to put a grin on your face. C'est cool? Now, in comes Fiver and he is in a fit! Men are coming, with dogs and poison gas! The crisis is at hand.
Now comes the question: was it ethical for you to choose to indulge in a substance that you knew beforehand would impare your ability to think sharply and react quickly even though it was at the time causing harm to neither you nor anyone else? The result, now that the unexpected has arisen, is that you are not able to respond to the crisis with your complete abilities. That might cost you your life, and it might take some of your warren-mates with you, too. |
