But then again, I haven't really played the first one due to not being able to find it for sale anywhere :(
My biggest problem with three is that I find that I'm still having to micromanage all my colonies even though the planetary governors were supposed to help take care of that. You've got a bit of a problem when the AI (artificial idiocy in this case) is still cranking out troop transports one after another even though you've only got enough troops available to fill about five transports and nowhere near enough combat ships to see them safely to wherever they need to go.
One thing I do like about three is that, from what I've seen, they've done a pretty good job of balancing science, military, and politics. I'd gotten used to two where I could sit quietly in one corner of the galaxy, do pretty much nothing but research, and then make a sudden sweep of the galaxy once I'd researched to advanced levels in about half the sciences.
