I was just thinking about that -- are we in fact halting evolution by protecting our weak and unfit or are we just delaying it as a species? Given that our mean "fitness quotient" is dropping because we continue to protect our unfit, will it even matter in the long run?

As human beings we're the first species we know of on the planet that can adapt our evironment to suit ourselves instead of being forced to adapt to an environment or die. Is this a complete arrest of evolution or have we simply planted the seeds for the destruction of our own species?
