I think the circuitry is the problem. It reads a string of digits instead of IBM - whatever on the BIOS screen when it loads up, and it never really made any noise. I was able to salvage all the data from the DOS partition I made. I only stored a few movies in there when I upgraded Distros a while back (I intended to get around to installing real DOS in on that partition for Redneck Ramage eventually). I was unable to dismount the partition (I had it on a 2.5 to 3.5" drive adapter on my main machine for recovery reasons). I wasn't able to fdisk or mount my main partion for recovering anything out of home after that. Oh well, nothing important on my notebook at the time.
