Both non-free softwares I use (because they are better than the free - which is unusual) are very reasonably priced at their entry-level.

Eagle electronics CAD is free (board-size limited, 2 layers) for non-commercial use. The same for commercial use is $US99. Or $US199 for a larger board size (larger than any small developer needs) and 4 layers. Then into the thousands for the really high end versions that the big companies use.

The FPGA chip programmer stuff I'm looking at is $US99 at the entry level (Cypress) or free (but only a windows version) at Xilinx.
