The FAQs on the site go in detail with tv and /dev/dsp. Even if you don't want to use MythTV instead of crappy old xawtv, the FAQs will give you a lot more insite into digital sound through /dev/dsp.

Take a look at it. xawtv doesn't use /dev/dsp unless it's recording, so it's hard to tell if you have it setup correctly. The best way to check would be to use alsaplayer on /dev/dsp while watching xawtv. If you hear an echo (some audio right behind the normal audio) then you know /dev/dsp is working.

The generel setup is done by plugging the little cable from wintv card audio out to the sound card's Line in. You then have to play around like heck with the volume - the general setup being that Line in must be the recording device, but be muted, or your audio will be all goofy. You'll have the analog and digital auto both playing at the same time - which sucks.

Finally, if you're using the OSS drivers, go grab the ALSA drivers and use them. OSS is all fine and dandy for most things, but the ALSA drivers are highly recommended for recording video. You can get a lot of stutter with the OSS sound drivers while dsp is processing the sound.

Oddly enough, I have the same exact TV card and sound card on my box, running MythTV. It works wonderfully.
