that you dont know the reference ... just as many other readers do not necessarily understand the obscure geek-jokes that fly around here. Niven and Pournelle are iconic science fiction writerts - essential education. And the "mote in Gods eye" is a biblic reference also ... refering to "the mote in thy brothers eye" from Matthew 7.
