When you get house insurance it's that that also covers the car and some other weird things. You can drive in the US with no insurance. In BC the police will pull you over, fine you, and have your car towed to the impound lot(or home if they are being nice). I know because my roommate wasn't paying attention and the cops pulled him over with expired plates(he didn't realize it expired) and fined him and wouldn't let him drive til he walked across to the insurance place and talked the cop into not towing his truck.
