it's pretty much the other way round. Violence, whether in games or films, is rated adults-only (there was a censored version of Half-Life there to avoid that; id Software, OTOH, refuses to do this, and pretty much every game of theirs has been put on the index there), while sexually, a lot more is accepted - for example, Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut was shown uncensored here (I've heard, haven't seen it) while in the US the juicier scenes were cut or otherwise censored. And generally - the number of boobs you see during the average hour of commercial TV here... (and even, if appropriate to the subject, on public tax-financed TV!) And that's just the graphical nudity - innuendo doesn't even make anyone blink.
Same with language (gotta be careful here not to break FYOS rule...):
I saw a German-French music show where they interviewed a US band. One of them accidentally cursed and then said 'oh.. sorry, you'll have to cut that out'. Interviewer: 'Nah, why, it's all right.' 'Really? Wow, that's cool, we can swear on TV?' replied the singer and started reeling off a list of swear words that I am NOT going to repeat here.
As for Europe in general - similar on the sexual side, probably slightly more permissive than Germany for violence. |
