Specifically, an idea for a unique product or process. They're supposed to run out after a certain number of years, though, at which point the idea becomes public domain. Problems have arisen, though, where the US Patent Office is letting almost anything get patented, and companies (pharmacutical companies in particular) are getting their patents artificially extended.
