XFree86 comes up in 2-3 seconds (although maxes the CPU and freezes out everything else for that interval), and then runs fine. WinAmp is quite happy, along with various other background tasks (like Opera). WinAmp hardly ever skips for me, and I use a DSP plugin... have you tried putting the task priority up for it? (I haven't, but it might help you). Also, try using standard output instead of DirectSound, or vica versa. DirectSound for me is really shonky.
