If you mean by "being on the safe side with the recording speed" that you record CD-Rs at 4x or 8x (or lower then 4x!!) then for the sake of your data PLEASE STOP!! newer burners, (and even more so with newer CD-Rs) are not meant to burn media that slowly anymore. The best recording speed is generally 12x, that will usually give you the lowest amount of C1/C2 errors as well as a VERY low amount of jitter, even with most of the poorer quality media. Slower does NOT equal better. (sorry, it's been a pet peeve of mine ever since I worked selling CD-Rs)
