| not everyone's as good as me at calling the helldesk... I produce one of two reactions in the techs they have now. One of the two, you can hear getting depressed when he realises it's me, because it almost always means an obscure problem that's escaped their scripted troubleshoot (since said script, suitably adapted (since the script is for Windows machines and I run Linux), is my first action on a problem) and furthermore he only knows Windows and a bit of Mac. The other guy, you can hear his smile getting wider as he realises that this is something interesting, not the same old idiots that have set outlook to use DUN instead of ethernet (not that they're even supposed to use outlook, Uni policy says it's not allowed), and it's an opportunity for him to learn something outside of the Windows and Mac stuff he already knows... but really, the problem's my end in only about 40% of calls - the rest of the time they've got a problem, and I'm just the first user to notice it... |
