M$ is okay, personally, I use on my computer a generic I picked up at Fry's for $5US, I've never had a problem with it, and it looks really cool because it's made out of translucent plastic so it lights up red. On my mom's computer, we've got a Labtec optical, wich works okay as long as you don't use the included drivers (I'm currently using the native WinXP drivers, but with 98 I'd use the Logitec drivers).
