Opinions needed (geekly spam) by Kickstart2006-11-19 12:55:59
Just because I have an aboundance of time... by skeegenin 2003-04-17 18:08:52
wait, no I don't! Okay, but I can sympathize. I have my own growing list (not one the likes of y'all are going to see, but still, I do have one). My analysis....

Kites: birds of a feather? Anyway, if you want to study a bird, I recommend avoiding such hard to find specimens. You'd fare better with a swallow or some crow, I'd bet!

Sterling Engines: honestly, KS. Don't you think j. would be a mite bit peeved to find out you'd boiled down the utensils and covered them in grease? That's a rhetorical question.

Guitar: anything that will keep you from getting high strung!

Water rockets: really! No need to flatter yourself.

Creating bad art: as long as you avoid works of self-pity or self-fulfilling prophecies. Oops.

Starting a small part-time home business: in what? Seriously, don't do this until you can answer that question without blinking.

Digital photography: oh, that answers my prior question. Just make sure all your "subjects" sign waivers first... can a rhino even sign a waiver?

Geocaching (need GPS): look here, there are enough Geo's in this world already. I'd really like to see someone take up Geo-trashing.

Small woodworking projects: *bites (own) tongue*

Mid-distance walking: if you're not getting out much, I highly recommend it.

Metal detector treasure hunting: sorry, you're under the age requirement and you don't have any grand-children (that I know of) to whom you can give all the crap you "discover".

Daily Zen meditation: is that what they're calling it these days?

Cryptography: oh, so you have something to hide, do you?

Learning to sail (requires paying for a course): definitely useful in a post-apocolyptic world.

Building an LCD video projector: the real question here is, just what do you need a life-size image of?

Learning harmonica: that idea just blows.

Continuing the work I've already done on OmniCode: what code?</troll>

Continuing to work on Intl. Democracy in Action Day: what's with these "continuing" entries anyway? Are you doing it? Is it done?

Electric transportation: sorry to burst your bubble, but metal has you beat in this department... flesh just isn't that conductive most of the time.

Writing fiction: you mena _lying_?</galaxy>

Becoming a better Perl coder: my opinion on languages is either you're using it, learning it, or possibly maintaining a minimal skill level so you could use it if the need arose. Anything else could be time spent doing the above.

Becoming a better PHP coder: GOTO Becoming a better Perl coder

Learning Esperanto (on lesson 4 of 10): so you're the one who stole brion!

Building miniature terrains: oh just get yourself a backhoe and do the real thing... it's much more manly.

Archery: another skill useful after we blow our modern world into oblivion.

Sustainable living: hmmm... am sensink trend here, no?

Fishing: KS! Get your itchy trigger finger away from that big red button, please. Or do you know something we don't know?

This blog: dude, you spend way too much time there already.

Okay, if you got this far here's my advice on actually getting somewhere with whatever you pick. First, make small goals for yourself that you can reasonably realize. Try (but don't force) these to be on a path to a larger goal. Set DATES for the goals you're currently working on! This one thing saves me everytime. If I don't set a date, or set a meaningless one (you'll know after a few tries), then I'm guaranteed to wuss out by the end. Don't bother setting dates for the larger goals as these are too volatile, and you don't know anything about what you're getting into at the beginning, anyway, so how could you know how long it will take? The last thing is the thing you're trying to do now: narrow down the field. Besides work, I have three goals on my plate right now and that feels like a lot (and I'm not married).
