for the weird-ass way it's wired. Because of where the optic nerve connects, you have a 'blind spot' in each eye. Try this:
close your left eye, and stare at the cross with your right eye. Keeping your gaze directly on the cross, slowly move your head closer to the screen. At a certain distance, the box on the right will seem to dissappear, as it falls behind your blind spot. Neat, huh?
