If you don't believe in god, then it's not scary at all-- it's not a possibility.
How about this: You believe in "the MAN", and when you die, you grovel before Cthulhu because you realize... "they were right!" What's the worst that can happen?
To an atheist-- it's one and the same possibility. You live life not believing in something for which there is no proof and, if you're wrong, well, at least billions of other people will be wrong, too (because, you know, they all contradict each other). Or you can live your life deluding yourself that there is a god-- perhaps that's more comforting.
I don't know-- I'd rather be wrong and true to myself, even if I have to sit down with the billions of others eating crow, than be "right" and live a lie pretending to believe in something that cannot exist. |
