The relationship between education and religion by Egaeus 2003-04-17 14:10:37
Someone asked yesterday why some people "assume" that an education would change one's fundamental belief in their religion.

First, let's talk about the word empirical. Dictionary.com says:

a. Relying on or derived from observation or experiment: empirical results that supported the hypothesis.

b. Verifiable or provable by means of observation or experiment: empirical laws.

Well, I focused on an education in science, because in science (as well as law, etc.) assertions are not assumed to be valid until there is empirical evidence that supports that assertion. If people start to apply that way of thinking to religion, then they must acknowledge that there is absolutely no empirical evidence for the existence of god, and either must live with the cognitive dissonance, or dismiss religion as just one more thing for which there is no evidence. I believe that most would do the latter.

It is not meant as an insult to anyone, just an observation of what I have seen, as well as experienced in my own life. Yes, I have changed my fundamental beliefs, and I am no longer a Christian, nor do I identify with conservatives any longer. I now find both religion and conservativism to be as distasteful as a fresh cow pie.

So what do you think?
