Terrorism in Northern Ireland, AFAIK (not an expert, please don't firebomb my house any UK/Ireland UFies) is about the freedom to govern themselves, one of the reasons I gave. Pretty basic right.

No one has proven yet *what* the motives of the events of 9/11 were yet - but I would be willing to bet that the foreign policy of the U.S. mucking about in the MidEast would be high on the list. If you don't think U.S. actions affect the common man in foreign countries basic needs...

Religious fanatacism only finds fertile soil when they people are uncontent in other areas of their life. How many well-educated, well-fed religious fanatics do you know? (no fair on the Billy Graham jokes Naruki)
Publicity? for what? That their people are being oppressed and there is nothing else they can do legitimately to bring people's attention to it?
Blackmail? Be good or we'll bomb you? Sounds like U.S. foreign policy to me.
