"Lacks power" isn't my criticism, by LionsPhil2003-04-17 13:53:46

You said "apparently it lacks power".

Compiling for each platform without a VM.... hmm... sounds a bit like C++ to me. We all know how well that works. Find me 1 piece of complex software written in C++ that compiles on mac, win, and any flavor of unix. Ok. Now find me one with a GUI that compiles. It's really easy to sit at your desk and say "just compile for whichever platform", it's not so easy to actually do it. Ergo, the JVM.

I've never tried a java compiler to machine code, but I've heard that they exist (in experimental form).

I don't think Java is perfect. Actually Perl is my favorite language. But I use java for most of my work and I love it. Does it have faults? Sure. But it has far fewer faults than most other languages. I don't think the JVM is one of them.

Actually, some of the new features of the JIT compilers are very interesting. The ability to optimize running server code is really cool.
