it's one that gets thrown around as a reason. You asked, I answered. I think people miss pointers. Frankly, I don't miss segfaults...

My quibble with the VM is the terrible inefficiency. Write-once-run-anyware would still be possible without it; you just compile for whichever platform you want to run on (although I can see why someone making closed-source products that doesn't know which platforms it might end up being run on might find it good).
Oh, and which compilers go to machine code? I hear that gcc v3 can do it, but apparently it's pretty lousy at it.
