My priority is having a well armed citizenry which can defend itself against malicious forces, government or not. I think that it is necessary to have weapons in the population in large numbers.
I suppose in my view, small numbers of accidental deaths don't outweigh the potential for large scale deaths. The best way (in my mind) to prevent tyranny is to have a citizenry that can defend itself.
Ask yourself what would have happened in Kosovo if a lot of the farmers that Slobodan's thugs rounded up and killed had had shotguns. At very worst, they would have taken some of the bastidges with them.
My .22 mag rifle won't do anything about a tank. It can, however, do something about the commander, if he is riding in the cupola. If the "Ruskies" have tanks driving up my street, the countries too far gone anyway and I'm heading for the hills to fight a guerilla action.
