Oh, I'll agree with Mr. Robbins that things have gotten a little more 1984-ish (in the Orwellian sense) and that the shadow of McCarthy is once again beginning to block the light of freedom here in the States. But the ideals upon which our government was founded are everlasting ideals. They will arise again in their full glory once we have learned how to cope with the paranoia that comes from realizing there are those who wish nothing so dearly as to see as many USians dead as possible.
We are still a young nation. Every decade brings new harsh realities and shatters more closely-held illusions. Nations, just as individuals, find the process of growing and maturing difficult. We will have our times of naivity, as well as our times of bravery and our times of terror. Through it all, though, our ideals will persevere, so long as even a few are brave enough to stand and be counted for their views. This is precisely the position of Mr. Robbins and Mrs. Sarandon -- they are willing to face the mockery and the unfairness that are born of fear so that they can speak out and help to arouse the conscience of the nation and the people they love.
Do I agree with what they say? Some, but by no means all. I'm afraid that this current war was more or less inevitable, and that to vilify those who have undertaken the horrible tasks of waging the war is taking things a bit too far. Decry the horrors of war by all means; rub everybody's noses in it so that we may be inspired to try ever harder to avoid them, to find better solutions. But I do not feel that our leaders are necessarily evil because they have failed to provide perfect solutions to the very difficult and frightening issues they are called upon to resolve. They are human, as are we all; we must simply keep trying to do better.
We have much yet to learn, and these are very trying time in which to learn the lessons facing us. If we stumble a bit now, then we needn't be harsh on ourselves. We need simply fulfill our obligations to ourselves to stand up again, try a little harder, and learn from history and from experience. |
