| Are we talking 3 or earlier, or a SPARC? 3 and earlier, you'd do well to get hold of an old SunOS (before it was called Solaris), because Linux can have trouble with the 68k's MMU. *BSD is better (what SunOS was originally based on...). SPARCs it's more complex. Solaris, in an appropriately aged version (so running Solaris 8 on a Sparc 1 is not a good idea) works nicely, but if you can get it working, so does Linux or *BSD. Note, however, that if you have the appropriate version of Solaris it'll run better than Linux because even Unix and its derivatives such as Linux suffer bloat. It's all a trade-off, and bear in mind Solaris can be crankier, but it's certain to support all the hardware you can connect to your Sun, whereas Linux kicks for x86/PCI/ISA peripheral support, but something more exotic such as SBus stuff can trip it up.If you can, go for one of Sun's x86 expansion cards and run Linux on that (yes, Sun did for a while sell PCs on expansion cards for their workstations... Really, Myke's about the best guy I know to ask about this, since he's a Sun (Microsystems) worshipper...) |
