Reading your subject gives me a headache, but is it really wrong?

I suggest (but do not assert) that it is wrong because R is quite obviously singular and cannot equal each individual number. However, it can equal a set, which is also singular. Thus, "... where R is the set of real numbers" would be correct.

And grammarians want to give this a whirl?
