Separation of Church and State in the U.S.? by BuggedEyes2006-11-19 12:55:59
Framers intent by Technobill 2003-04-02 11:29:51
Was that the nation would be founded as a "shining city on a hill" - An example of how things should be run to the rest of the world.

The Declaration of Independence which was unanimously approved by the 13 colonies mentioned God twice; one of those times was to invoke His guidance in their undertaking, that they might be successful.

Something worth examining closely is the First Amendment, which prohibits congress from passing a law regarding the establishment of religion. Notice that it is very much a one way street, as Religion is not prohibited from being mentioned in mottos and pledges.

Jefferson wrote that there is a "wall of separation" between church and state, but it was a one directional wall; the state could not interfere with the freedoms of the church, but the church was more than welcome to give its input on the state. The nation was created, like it or not, on the concept of moral virtue based on religious (Christian) ethics.

One Supreme Court justice (I forget the name) once lamented that "if we keep mentioning the 'separation of church and state' people are going to think it's a part of the constitution!" Which, of course, it is not.

I got my BA in part by studying early American history, and one thing that I noticed was remarkable was how much people said "think about what the framers wanted" in this respect, while forgetting that the people who founded this nation were religious, and wanted God to be a part of the nation's birth, and asked for His guidance and protection.
