The US is such a huge influence in this world that it is blamed for many ills that are unrelated to anything it does. And public opinion CAN be very hard to change.

I don't think that Saddam is unpopular in Iraq. (Except in Kurdistan - for good reasons). So whichever government is put in place will NOT have the support of the population.

Put this together with the fact that a government can't make a lot of changes in a short time. There is a huge inertia of bureaucracy that has to change - and if it is not willing to change, it will likely change for the worse rather than for the better, no matter how good the intentions of the people in charge are.

I predict troubles and chaos for Iraq for at least the next twenty years. And exploitation of their oil.
