Dennis, I understand where you are coming from/what you experienced... I have run into it. Your partner was right... get into a public place, and then ignore it if possible, but just in case, get where there are witnesses... and should something happen, pray devoutly you don't get stuck with police with a serious bias...
I'm a little annerved on this issue right now... I was up in Toronto with my partner last weekend, and he is on the Police/Gay Liason commission for the city of Toronto, and one of the problems he is getting to deal with in his area is very bad police reactions following gay-bashings (one occurred this past weekend, actually, and he and I realized it was one block over from where we were walking, at the time we were walking).
I'm simply thankful nothing more than words occurred, especially with folks as on edge as they are, and seem to be willing to take it out on anything outside "proper" that they can come up with.
