I am NOT arguing for the actions of what Bush has chosen to do. In the context of the UN, the Actions of the US seem to me to undermine what progress has been made in settling International problems through dialogue. Bush is not the only one hurting the UN in that fashion IMHO, but France is also guilty. However my objection was claiming that there has been an established precedence of UN sanctioning a war or even much of coordinating retaliation for aggression, always some permanent member of the security council could prevent that sort of unanimity. The Gulf War and the US/Afgan conflict are the only example of such unanimity that I am aware of.

Generally aggressions start by an aggressor and its allies, the victim calls in its allies to help defend it, and the UN acts only in the role of mediator. If anything is tradition at all, then that is the traditional role of the UN.
