...something like "pretola" (sp?), and they were given to children as "little rewards" for saying their prayers, and the like (note that if held with the "tails" up, they resemble shoulders, arms and hands of a child praying or reading a missal).

Of course, that could all be malarkey, too; but given that it came off box of pretzels made by a company founded in the USA by German immigrants, it surprized me that a German origin wasn't claimed.
