However, I do see many signs of similar-sounding words being spelled alike becoming accepted practise. So I may be going against popular opinion.
I was listening to a "talking head" recently describing how modern English is evolving. This expert was asked if spell ckeckers were destroying people's ability to spell. He said that it only accelerates a natuaral trend in any language. Homophones do tend to adopt a common spelling over time. He gave examples of words originally spelt differntly coming to have a single spelling even before computerized illiteracy. So your observation was correct, as I pointed out.

As you say, it has nothing to do with word origins.
