As afghanistan is the ONLY example of an attack being sanctioned through the UN, that makes the tradition... a few years old. Since the UN was formed only responses to attack have been coordinated at the UN level, and those have all been more recent. The Vietnam conflict had no UN oversite that I can find at all. Korea is similar. The troops in Korea are still US troops and not UN peacekeepers. How about Falkland Islands? Hmmm, Granada?, Russian attack of Afghanistan?, I hope that the UN did serve as a international place of diplomacy in all these conflicts, but I do not know that it did. And I very much doubt that any of the conflicts I've named had UN sanction before the first act of aggression occurred.
