In as much as the UN is only 50 years old... In the past this was dealt with by a country getting itself and any of the allies it could gather and thumping the bad guy a good one. Even in more recent years, I dare you to point me to a war that had even as much dialogue as this one has had. And you won't find any where the UN was consulted with the exception of "Desert Storm". And even there, Iraq did not consult the UN before invading Kuwait. I would like to think that this (talking to the UN before all conflicts) would be expected of all nations in the future. But I doubt it will be.
