What precedent would that be? Ignoring the UN? That's not new. Just ask Saddam.

The UN is already lacks the power to block or punish attacks, especially if made by one of the veto members of the UN (or one of their allies). And, looking back at the Cold War, we've had a situation where countries are only as strong as their alliances for a while (remember NATO vs. the Warsaw Pact?). The primary difference is that alliances are now usually public knowledge (IIRC, alliances pre-WWII were often done behind the scenes).
