I forget the proper name (my memory does that, usually when I really need the word)

Where the strings connect on the body...the bridge...it's how the intonation of each string is set...generally two ways they can be adjusted...height and length.

Proper adjustment (at least as far as a Strat is...should work as a starter for any electric) is to set the high E so that the 12th fret harmonic is directly over the 12th fret. B should be set back slightly (about the width of the string)...G should be set back from B about the width of the G string...D should be equal to B, A back from D the width of the A string, and E set back from A the width of the E string. From there it's just tweaking...
