Historically? YES, it is. The only stupid by dire_lobo2003-03-07 13:33:54
So when do you propose for this to be over? by JPaganel2003-03-07 13:53:32
      Honestly, I can't answer that. by dire_lobo2003-03-07 14:30:43

Ghandi doesn not say there are no victories... by dire_lobo 2003-03-07 16:18:39
but perhaps, rather that "true" moral victory is not when you defeat your enemy, but when you win to your side...."The roots of non-cooperation lie not in hatred but in justice, if not in love." Yeah, it's "squishy" -- I'm the original "second place is first LOSER" kind of guy, but I do try to grow and learn more everyday...

"Truth is by nature self-evident, as soon as you remove the cobwebs of ignorance that surround it, it shines clear."

"All compromise is based on give and take, but there can be no give and take on fundamentals. Any compromise on mere fundamentals is a surrender. For it is all give and no take."

"How can one be compelled to accept slavery? I simply refuse to do the master's bidding. He may torture me, break my bones to atoms and even kill me. He will then have my dead body, not my obedience. Ultimately, therefore, it is I who am the victor and not he, for he has failed in getting me to do what he wanted done."

"Non-violence requires a double faith, faith in God and also faith in man." (and I would say, faith in oneself)

"Courage has never been known to be a matter of muscle; it is a matter of the heart. The toughest muscle has been known to tremble before an imaginary fear. It was the heart that set the muscle atrembling."

"Non-violence is not a quality to be evolved or expressed to order. It is an inward growth depending for sustenance upon intense individual effort."

"There are times when you have to obey a call which is the highest of all, i.e. the voice of conscience even though such obedience may cost many a bitter tear, and even more, separation from friends, from family, from the state to which you may belong, from all that you have held as dear as life itself. For this obedience is the law of our being."

"The human voice can never reach the distance that is covered by the still small voice of conscience."

"Manliness consists not in bluff, bravado or lordliness. It consists in daring to do the right and facing consequences whether it is in matters social, political or other. It consists in deeds, not in words."

Words to live by? Perhaps not, for am am admittedly a weak, competitive and often insensitive person.
Ideals to strive for? I really try every day....

Ghandi gave HIS life for the ideals expressed in these words. Martin Luther King Jr. gave HIS life for them. Medgar Evers gave HIS life for them. Literally thousands upon thousands of others have also.

Why must I accept that I am not as much a man as they? Could I look my children in the eyes if I did not take a stand and try to make the world a better place for them?
