.. you've probably saved my good night sleep.. I've been very irritated since I read that.

One thing to add: If I see this right, you end up showing some kind of ID anyway if nobody recognizes you.. otherwise I could just walk in and claim to be some unknown person on the voting list.

I've had an ID card for my whole lifetime and I don't really see it as some kind of restriction of my civil liberties (if you meant this by mentioning ACLU). I think of it as a trusted, standardized way of identifying myself to some unkown stranger if I need to do so. Perhaps I should study the ACLU's arguments on that to see the 'problem' about this.
