So when do you propose for this to be over? | by JPaganel | 2003-03-07 13:53:32 |
| Honestly, I can't answer that. |

And I don't think anyone can. The point I am trying to make is that through a lack of understanding, (ignorance) it is easy to dismiss another persons fears as "stupid" Maybe it's the buddist in me, but I believe that in this case, the "debits" as you call them may be valid as long as institutional AND noninstitionalized racism exist.
Ghandi said "What kind of victory is it when someone is left defeated?" In my very humble opinion, if even ONE person is afraid to vote because they relate these current tactics to previous (and proven discriminatory) ones, then the "one" has been defeated.
He also said "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." In this instance I perceive ignorance (NOT racism or intolerance, just a lack of understanding). If I desire to change the world, I am obligated to speak out. NOTE: This does not make my opinions/perceptions any more valid than another, but I feel compelled to bring them to the table.
"Abstract truth has no value unless it incarnates in human beings who represent it, by proving their readiness to die for it."
People died seeking the right to vote in the US. To call those who remember such sacrifice, and fear a return to those days, "stupid" is an insult to all humanity. To think that we cannot move beyond this would also be folly. My hope is that by nonviolently confronting peoples assumptions, they have an opportunity to reflect, and perhaps learn...

It's not about collecting -- it's about demanding justice and making sacrifices to see that it happens.
