thing is either not taking the time to remember history or not bothering to think it's lessons are worth remembering. If you're too young to remember the struggle disenfranchised peoples had to get the vote, you might not understand, but your bright, and hopefully, some day you will.(People DIED fighting for this "inalienable right")
MISSISSIPPI. get it?
If you were an older Black/Negro/African American person, you might be able to understand their fear -- all I can to is testify to the impact of institutionalized racism (from both history and personal experience).
A hundred years of: Hey BOY, whudda ya think yer doin at the polls? Y'all get yer "voter ID"? nope? sorry BOY -- folks like you can't vote lessin ya got a ID.... dija pass yer votin' test? NO? Ya damn cotton pickers ain't got the money ta pay yer "poll tax" do ya... git back ta work Ni***! WHAT? Ya say a couldn't pass yer lit'racy test 'cause ya kent READ? well hell BOY, how you ignerent folks plannin ta read the ballot?
"some older voters would leave the polls rather than vote if they're asked to show identification. NO S**t. Because for years, that's the exact kind of tactic that was used to keep them AWAY from the polls.
"Perception is sometimes reality," Espy said. "The perception of this in the African-American community is that this is a slap in African-American faces."
Maybe because of HUNDREDS of years of oppression?
Stupid is as stupid does. Talking without understanding is a case of the "does"
Ignorance can be excused once -- in this instance, after that it starts to sound like a racist excuse... At least I believe it would to those whos ancestors have been raped, lynched, beaten, attacked with police dogs, forced from peaceful protests at the wrong end of a high pressure fire hose (try it - it sucks -- and it hurts) and oh yeah, SOLD INTO SLAVERY.
We are not talking about the typical sheltered "spoiled white kids from the suburbs." We're talikng about people who REMEMBER friends and neighbors who quite literally sacrificed their LIVES to change intitutionalized policies of oppression.
Is this perception correct in today's society? I can't answer that question. Neither can you. But neither of us has the right to say those feelings are invalid, much less "stupid" |
