That Thinkpad will support parallel or pcmcia cdrom drives. Then boot from floppy with the appropriate boot params to show the kernel where to find the CDR. Installing the entire thing from floppy will be a killer; highly un-recommended.

Any current distro will do. Just be careful to only install the packages you want.
