This be for the math and physics geeks out there by frogboy 2003-02-27 16:58:45
Perhaps you can tell me what the heck I'm doing wrong.

I've got a gram of hydrogen that's ripped apart and the component electrons and protons placed at opposite poles of the Earth. I have to find the compressive force on the planet.

So I find the charge for particle group. 1g H is nearly a mol so I multiply that by avagadro's constant to get the number of particles. I then multiply by the charge for an individual particle; this came out to 95.6kC and -95.6kC.
Then I shove it in the formula for electric force:
F=(|q1||q2|)/r^2
r is in this case the diameter of the earth, which squared came to 162Tm^2. Then I multiply the charges by each other, this was 9.14GC^2.
Then I divided the two and came up with 56.4 micro-Newtons.

However, I heard my teacher telling a student that the force was quite substantial, so obviously I'm very,very, wrong.
