Ok, I could see that. Given the relatively short timespan and the peresecution they faced, I always interpreted it as the existing churches were all part of the Catholic church, they just lacked a central structure, but it could equally be interpreted as a bunch of different independant churches which then unified into the Catholic church.
The reason I'd lean towards the single church all along intepretation is that while there were a lot distinct churches with differing beliefs and such, many(most/all?) of them were getting guidance from the same central figure, Paul. As the number of christians in those churches, as well as the number of churches, grew, keeping everyone on track became more than what one guy could stay on top of, hence the birth of the whole beaurocratic structure of the Catholic Church.
But even accepting your interpretation, there was a relatively narrow window where there were individual pre-Catholic churches compared to the duration of time where there was just a Catholic church, or even compared to the window where there was a Catholic church but no formalized Bible.
So I think my original point is still valid, namely that "Hell wasn't a Catholic invention since it's in the Bible" isn't a valid argument. (Quotes used to delineate a specific thought, and not necessarily someone's specific words). |
