To continue your dessert analogy, let's pretend that God is the cheesecake. If I have cheesecake set down in front of me, I'm going to believe it exists, and you can be sure that I'll eat it. If someone tells me that cheesecake exists, and that if I'm a good boy I'll get some, but I've never seen cheesecake, and have no empirical proof that it exists, then why should I choose to believe in it? I'd rather eat the food I have, and not starve to death.
