You've got your history a bit out of kilter.

First off, at the beginning the Christian church _was_ the Catholic church. So any developments in Christianity before the great schism and the split off of the Eastern Orthodox church are creations of the Catholic Church. Even after that, as both have a similar structure and both call themselves Catholic, then you don't really have Christian but non-Catholic developments until Martin Luther came along in the 1400s.

Additionally, there was no canonized "Bible" until sometime in the 300s AD (IIRC... that date could be off by a bit). Before that there was simply a collection of writings. So saying something was "part of the Bible since it was first written" implies a single event that never happened. As pointed out elsewhere, Revelation was written well after Christ's life, as well as all the rest of the New Testament. When the Church decided to select a specific set of writings and call it the Bible, they decided to include Revelations in that set.

This doesn't contradict the theory that they imported the idea of Hell from eastern religions; it could easily be argued that they imported the idea, which influenced Christians of the time. One of the Christians thus influenced went on to write the book of Revelations. This book, supporting the Catholic idea of Hell, is a prime candidate for inclusion in their Bible, as it's the best bit of writing they have supporting the whole Hell concept.

Disclaimer: I'm not sure what I believe personally, and I'm not supporting either side on this argument. Just wanted to remove some flawed assumptions from a debate which I'm enjoying watching.
