Canadian CD Levy by lord_dolphin 2003-02-27 12:37:49
There has been some interest in the CD Levy recently, so I thought I would make a little post about it :) The levy is a payment people make per CD they purchase, which is supposed to go towards the people who are "losing money" due to the fact that "every CD purchased is used for music piracy". Currently the CD levy consists of:

Audio cassettes of 40 minutes or more in length 29¢
CD-R and CD-RW 21¢
CD-R Audio, CD-RW Audio and MiniDisc 77¢
(okay okay, it's not JUST on CDs) But the Canadian Private Copying Collective (the people who collect the levy) wish to rasie the levy to the following:

Audio cassettes of 40 minutes or more in length 51¢
CD-R 100 MB or more 59¢
CD-RW 100 MB or more 49¢
CD-R Audio, CD-RW Audio and MiniDisc $1.15
Recordable DVD 65¢
Internal memory in MP3 players
1 GB or less $0.0111/MB
Greater than 1 GB $11.10 on the first GB
$7.98/GB on GBs 2 to 5
$5.98/GB on GBs 6 to 10
$3.99/GB on GBs 11 to 20
$1.99/GB on GBs 21 and greater

One of the interesting things is that the levy has existed since 1999, and still, not one single penny has been paid out to the people to whom it was promised. How do I know this? Easy, I know a few members of Socan, one of the groups of independant artists who SHOULD be recieveing monthly cheques from the levy. none of them have recieved any money!!

I also know that the members of the CPCC recently decided to take an all expenses paid "business trip" to Europe to attend a forum, in the attempts to get the same thing going over there.

Why should the levy be increased? none of it is going where it should, and EVERYONE is getting jipped!
