| They are certainly entitled to their own opinions, but teachers should not always express those opinions in the forum of the classroom. Under certain circumstances it could easily be immoral. After all, these people have assumed the duty of instructing future generations.
In a school I attended during my highschool years, teachers would go so far as to tell students that were actually trying, "You're too stupid to be here. You're old enough now that you can just quit. That's what you ought to do." While they are certainly entitled to that opinion, they should NOT be expressing that to these children in class.
It would be fine for them to state that they feel war with Iraq is inappropriate. I don't feel that expressing support and well-wishing for the soldiers deployed flys in the face of that opinion though. If we had no soldiers, our country would be handily invaded and rather torn up by our many enemies. I feel that military employment is a perfectly legitimate profession. One can be anti-war and pro-soldier. They are enlisted to protect our country and our freedoms.
What perchance do these "enlightened teachers" suppose should be done about Iraq? They are in breach according to the data I have seen, which means something must be done. How can the UN maintain legitimacy if it does nothing? Another resolution that includes no penalties will not help. I am not saying we have to go to war. I am saying that I wish to know what the options are that might be effective. I haven't heard any so far. |
