| You can liberate a country from an oppressive government. You can't liberate a country from its own oppressive culture.
What would you have the US do? Invade India, take over the government, and institute a law against it? We could do that[1], but in the past, we have always set up democratic governments. In this case, we would become a conquering nation, forcing our will on that country's people.[2]
That doesn't mean we should do nothing. But the situation is entirely different from our past "liberations".
[1] We "could", ignoring the question of whether we would win, and ignoring the reaction of the international ocmmunity.
[2] I suppose you can argue that forcing a democratic government can violate the will of the people, but that's a different argument. |
