I've found it extremely useful to aid in getting rid of popup generators, spyware, malware, and other crapola on the system.
Also, keep in mind that KaZaa has apparently entered into a partnership of dubious moral fiber, in that people who use the free KaZaa file sharing software ALSO agree to have their extra processor cycles, disk space, and bandwidth used as server resources by KaZaa's 'sponsors'... for perpetuity (uninstalling KaZaa does NOT uninstall these other programs... and oh yes, the KaZaa EULA states that the 'rights' to your machine's resources do NOT expire if you choose to not use KaZaa anymore). Disabling or removing the "distributed ad-serving" portions of the KaZaa installation will, of course, break KaZaa. KaZaa Lite apparently is not burdened with this stuff... but I suspect it'll only be a matter of time.
There may be other "free" software that also 'fronts' for such evil shenanigans. Personally , I don't regard myself OR my systems as 'resources' for advertising companies... so I'm pretty adamant about cleaning such stuff off of them. It'd bad enough to get spammed with the ads, but to have my system used as part of a distributed server network for them too? I think not. |
