- If they are a former windows user you might want to try IceWM instead of Wmaker or Afterstep.
- If you're going with Slackware, you could try CollegeLinux, but I'm not entirely sure that it is suited for this machine (it is an easier to install/use Slackware, but it might be meant for newer machines).
- You could also try Libranet, which is a Debian derivative that uses IceWM as its default window manager. The newer versions cost money, but there is an older version free for download. I have a P150 box running Debian woody and GNOME, so there is no problem running Debian on older hardware, even with a less lightweight wm.
- Abiword has a Windows version as well, so you might want to install that on any Windows machines that may be in the house. That'd take care of some of the document portability issues (saving to .rtf also will help).
- If you want Windows instead (or want to dual boot), use Win98SE. It has no trouble running on Pentium machines of that speed (well no more trouble than it has running on anything else). |
